UNIX/Linux/Mac OS X. You will need to install FIQHack's dependencies: zlib (which is probably installed already, but you may need to get its development headers from your package manager), and (if you want a working server binary) inetd, postgresql and pgcrypto. You also need development headers for the libraries listed. NetHack 3.6.0 for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and later. This is a very traditional NetHack that runs in text mode from the command line or from Finder. Mount this image to start the installer. Files are placed under /usr/local/gamesand /Applications. (Detailed Mac OS X download instructions. NetHack 3.6.0 contains some code reorganization, new features, and bugfixes. The file doc/fixes36.0 in the source distribution has a full list of each. The text in there was written for the development team's own use and is provided 'as is', so please do not ask us to further explain the entries in that file.

Classic MacOS (previously simply called System Software) was the operating system preloaded on Macs from 1984 to 2001. macOS (previously called Mac OS X) is a Unix-based operating system that has been preloaded on Macs from 2001 to today.
NetHack has been available for classic MacOS since at least NetHack 3.0.5, released in 1989. It continued to be supported during the long reign of NetHack 3.4.3, but it is unknown if NetHack 3.6.4 will build or run on it. In the NetHack source code, files relevant to classic MacOS are stored in sys/mac.
NetHack is currently supported for modern macOS (ie Mac OS X). Since macOS is a Unix-based system, the build files are in sys/unix, not in sys/mac. It can be compiled with tiles, according to this discussion.
